A handbook for energy producers is published

"Energy from field energy crops - a handbook for energy producers" is published. This handbook contains practical information on the utilisation of field energy crops for heat and power. The crops discussed are reed canary grass, willow, hemp and poplar. Production of biogas from energy crops is also introduced. The handbook details cultivation and harvesting of crops, logistics, energy production technologies, rationality and economics of production. Other important issues, including support and incentive mechanisms, are also discussed. The handbook is mainly targeted at authorities, project developers, investors, plant operators, potential bioenergy users, the applied research community and representatives of companies involved in the crop-to-energy production chain.

Report "Best Practice - Business models" is published

The document “Best practice – Business Models for bio-energy success stories” describes different business models/success stories of the partner countries which are focused on the question:

What are the key factors of success and sustainability of existing and future bio-energy initiatives?

The existing business models in each country are described and the good and weak points of each model for the type of activity are discussed in this document by using a template. The goal of this template is to compare different success stories to evaluate the key criterions in detail. ENCROP partners decided to use this template to compare different success stories to evaluate important key criteria concerning bio-energy success stories which will bring along positive effects for the region. The following business models/success stories are described and evaluated:

AUSTRIA: Biogas production exceptionally out of green material in South Burgenland

ITALY: “Clean Energy” Apiro

SPAIN: VALORIZA Plant – Energy production out of Orujillo and other autochthonous biomass in Puente Genil, Andalucia

FINLAND: Kokkolan Voima Oy – Integrated reed canary grass processing and feeding system in the large scale CHP plant

GERMANY: From a biogas plant to a green energy community (biogas plant in Rodheim)

SWEDEN: ENA Enköping – Integration of salix plantation, wastewater treatment, ashsludge recycling and energy production

Common recommendations for a successful implementation of such business models are developed out of this template and published in the document “Best practice – Business Models for Bio-energy Success Stories”

Five national handbooks are published now

The target audience for national handbooks is energy producers, e.g. plant operators and investment decision-makers. The content of national handbooks varies in each country because the most potential energy crops are different. Also the energy conversion technology varies: In Finland, Sweden, Italy and Spain the conversion technology is combustion and in Austria and Germany the energy crops are converted in energy in biogas system.

The handbooks are now published in Finnish, Swedish, Italian, German and Spanish.
